Kicking It Into High Gear

Words cannot describe the feeling this Dad got the other night, but I’m going to do my best to pass along my emotion.

Let me set the scene….

You’re lying in bed, saying goodnight to your 20-week-pregnant wife, getting ready to catch what few hours of sleep you can actually get, when all of a sudden she grabs your hand, nearly ripping your arm out of its socket and says, “Just wait…” as she smushes it against her hardly-bumpy baby belly.  You stare off through sleepy eyes wondering if this is the night that she’s finally starting to lose it, only for her to say, “Crap!  I just felt something.  Are you getting anything?”

You let this happen for a few nights, hoping to share in her excitement, only to be met with disappointment.  You roll over and go to bed thinking, “maybe tomorrow night.”

Then, one fateful night, you roll right into the nightly process, expecting failure when, out of nowhere…

bam

A tiny little hand (or maybe it was a tiny little foot) comes flying at your hand like he’s batman, and you’re a member of the Rogues Gallery.

I like to think that I’m a decently manly man.  Sure, I’ll sing the occasional round of “Do You Want To Build a Snowman”, and have been known to wear a pink shirt from time to time (IT’S SALMON!), but the emotion that courses through your body the moment you realize something you helped create made physical contact with you is immeasurable and overwhelming.  I struggled as much as I could to fight back pure, raw joy in an attempt to play it cool.

But, you know what?  Let me go on record as saying that the feeling I felt was pretty damn special.  I wanted to cry tears of joy, and yeah, maybe I let one or two go.  It’s something you don’t really realize is possible until you actually get to experience it, and it’s amazing.

Now that I’m finished gushing, we seem to be doing pretty well.  I got to perform one of my first fatherly duties this past weekend when I was tasked with picking out a monitor.  It’s a terrifying decision, really.  There must be, at least, a half-million different types out there, and they all seem to get lousy ratings!  Hopefully we picked the right one, but I’d love to hear what you all went with.  My hope going forward is to review stuff like that, so keep an eye out for those reviews.

I also didn’t get to post my Father’s Day acquisition.  I’m pretty pumped about that…

One last thing.  I’d love some feedback.  What do you want to read?  What will draw you in and keep you coming back to read?  Leave me a comment below, and thanks again for reading!

  1. Good stuff, Zach! Enjoy those sweet baby kicks, words can’t describe them 🙂 I also researched ever-y-thing we bought while I was pregnant, but I can’t give you my review on the baby monitor bc I haven’t used it yet. I bought a Motorola one (not sure which one off the too of my head, but I remember liking all of the reviews!). I’ll need to start using it soon though, so I’ll let you know my thoughts.

  2. Great posts so far! I can’t imagine feeling that kick for the first time, memorable. It’d be awesome to see the trials/tribulations of picking out some of the more techie baby stuff like the baby monitor and reviews as you are planning on doing.

    1. Thanks, Chris! My hope is to review as much of the stuff as I can, as we get it. Obviously we’ll have some time before that happens, with the baby not due until October, but I’m hoping to keep writing well after he’s born!
